SOCIAL MEDIA CLARIFICATION

Published: September 3, 2020

Students for a Safer NUS would like to reiterate our stance as a student group that aims to spark much-needed dialogue and raise awareness around systemic and structural issues surrounding our current sexual climate. We avoid individualizing responsibility and instead, look towards creating more safe spaces for open and candid conversation. We are not, and do not claim to be, an authority on these issues. However, as the only student-focused organisation publicly exploring these issues at the moment, we recognise the responsibility we hold. With that said, we also strongly encourage our readers to do their own critical research as well as consult alternative sources of information.

In response to some of the comments that we have received on recent posts, please note that we do see it to be our priority to address and supplement our posts with more information when we can. However, we do wish to emphasise good faith and open-mindedness when approaching these discussions. Additionally, we may not be immediate in responding to your comments. Creating a discursive and constructive reply to these comments does take time, especially in our capacity as university students.

It is important that our readers understand our posts in their entirety rather than isolated points. We would also like to point out the limits of the infographics themselves, especially in attempting to condense complex topics into bite-sized pieces of information that are fit for social media. We ask that you give us some leeway should we omit certain specifics.

In the event that we unknowingly post anything incorrect, please do let us know. We want to remain responsible and accountable to the student community, as well as the larger public. Moving forward, we will be looking into creating more spaces for folks to discuss and engage with these critical issues.
