Students for a Safer NUS notes with concern the recent case involving an act of intimate partner violence committed by a dental student in NUS, and understands that the case took place in mid-2019 and is being heard in court now. We understand that this has caused many students to feel physically and emotionally unsafe on campus. It is essential that students feel safe on campus without having to fear a similar act of violence being committed against them at any point in time, be it by their partners or by any other persons on campus. We are currently in touch with the relevant offices in NUS to find out more on what measures are being taken to keep the survivor and other students safe, and how NUS currently responds to such cases, and a statement will be released in detail on this once we have more information. For all students to feel safe in our University, we have to take clear steps towards the elimination of such cases, and put in place robust support and protection systems to assure that students have someone to turn to, and that measures are in place to ensure students need not fear a reprisal from an existing or potential perpetrator.
